If you’re feeling like a hearty home-cooked meal but don’t have the time to make one, Holy Cannoli is here to save the day. The cart, located in the Green Castle Food Carts spot in NE Portland, even looks like a welcoming home kitchen on the inside. Though the food leaves your belly filled with delight, the cart pod itself was eerily quiet on a Sunday evening. Perhaps enjoy your food back at home or bring a group of friends with you.

The owner, Jessy, makes every meal from his family’s Sicilian recipes and the result is a genuinely delicious bite to eat.  His idea to start the cart was inspired by his Nana’s words: “It’s so sad that a lot of people don’t know what great Italian food really tastes like. If my mother’s Sicilian recipes could be shared with the world, everyone would be fat and happy.” Sharing his happiness, Jessy’s cart gives a slice of Sicilian comfort food to Portland’s foodies.

With heaps of melted cheese, freshly made marinara sauce and handmade meatballs the size of baseballs, the wicked meatball sandwich ($7.50) is a must have at Holy Cannoli Wicked Italian. Another favorite is the hefeweizen beer-battered eggplant sandwich ($7.50) with provolone, mozzarella, pesto-mayo and marinara. Beware, the cheese will stretch nearly a foot for each bite and these sandwiches may just fill you up with half of the sandwich uneaten.

Be sure to leave room for dessert, as the cannolis are the highlight of this cart. Made from scratch each day, there are specials ranging from caramel to passion fruit and they always serve the classic cannoli with chocolate chips or dipped in chocolate sauce ($2.00). The shell is light, crunchy and fluffy, and the filling heavy and creamy—sprinkled with a snowfall of powdered sugar (Track daily specials on the cart’s Facebook page).

If you’re looking for a lighter bite, try the sliders—one meatball on a slider bun with pesto mayo and provolone ($3.00). As a special treat, wash your meal down with an Italian soda ($2.50).

Bonus: their rolls are vegan and they offer vegan and vegetarian spaghetti. As it is rare to find a cart open for dinner hours, Holy Cannoli Wicked Italian hits the spot for a comfortable home-cooked experience during the noon or evening meal.

What I had:

Wicked Meatball Sandwich $7.50
