Travel Spotlight: It’s a Burl

Just off the redwood highway, there’s a mystical woodland fantasyland among the lush greenery. Old stumps have been turned into wizards. Branches and vines twist around the base of a circular tree house. Imaginative pieces made from burl wood decorate the walls and ground, and swings hang from the porch of a three-story structure high in a maple tree. It’s not a recreation of a J.R.R. Tolkein scene—It’s a Burl is an art gallery, shop and wood yard in Kerby. Judging from the circular door to the gallery and the whimsical ornaments, Tolkein might have had an influence. The gallery has work from local artists and woodworks, and the wood yard sells an array of raw hardwoods. It’s a sight to be seen for all who appreciate craftsmanship, art and Middle Earth.
